Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement (CAVA)
Accredited through AIM Qualifications
Distance learning, Zoom and classroom
The Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement (CAVA) has replaced two previous assessing qualifications: the A1 and A2. This is the qualification you need if you want to become an educational assessor. The EMG offers this course in the classroom or as distance learning, so you can learn in a way that suits you!
Who is it for?
The course is perfect for learners who have already begun or are looking to begin a career in assessing. You’ll gain an understanding of the principles and practices of assessment, learn how to effectively assess learners’ occupational competence and make sound assessment decisions. We will ensure you are fully prepared for your role as an assessor. Interested in teaching as well? Combine this course with the Level 3 Award in Education and Training and save over £100.
What do I need if I want to do this course?
It’s important that you’re occupationally competent in the area you’d like to assess, which means that if you want to assess retail NVQs, you’ll need to have worked in retail within the last 10 years. You also need to be already working with at least one learner on an accredited qualification because we will need to observe you in the workplace with them. We can give you advice and guidance if you’re not sure about either of these elements. Please speak to us before signing up if you need help.
How much time will it take?
Classroom learning: we will meet for four full days in the classroom then we will observe you in the workplace on two or more occasions. Observations should take no more than an hour on each occasion. The classroom sessions can take place in a variety of ways: four days back to back; over the course of two weekends; once a week for 4 weeks… speak to us about your requirements.
Distance learning: you'll have a workbook and assessment pack and you can work through at your own pace. The whole course should take around 30 hours. You will have 9 months to complete your coursework.
Are there any exams?
No. Your work isn’t graded either: you either pass or you are referred, which means you have an opportunity to resubmit your work. We will of course give you as much support as you need to pass! Your work will be assessed by your tutor.
Who is my tutor?
It’s Sarah Harris. Sarah worked in senior management at a charity for nine years, qualified with the Diploma To Teach In The Lifelong Learning Sector (DTLLS) in 2011 and has been writing, assessing and delivering training for a variety of delegates for over ten years. She has worked in a mainstream school, has lots of experience in Alternative Education and now runs The EMG with her business partner Amanda Harriott.

Are there any exams?
No. Your work isn’t graded either: you either pass or you are referred, which means you have an opportunity to resubmit your work once per assessment, after which a charge is added. We will give you as much support as you need to pass first time! Your work will be assessed by your tutor.
Are there any observations?
There are a minimum of two observations, where we will want to see you setting up and assessment with and giving feedback to a learner. Your workbook details exactly what we'll be looking for: there are never any secrets or surprises!
I want to study via distance learning! How will the observations work for me?
You can send in a video of you teaching and your tutor will send you feedback. There are also opportunities for some observations to be completed by an expert witness within your organisations (restrictions apply).
