Pastoral support in education

This fast-paced programme has been designed for new pastoral workers, Heads of House and Heads of Year giving essential knowledge including: 

 

Identify the roles and responsibilities of pastoral workers, Heads of House and Heads of Year. 

 

Analyse theories and their relevance to supporting students effectively. 

 

Understand the concepts of equality and diversity within the school context and develop strategies for inclusion. 

 

Define essential LGBTQI+ terminology and issues and challenges affecting students. 

 

Recognise common mental health issues among adolescents, their signs and symptoms. 

Identify available resources and support systems for students. 

 

Recognise various types of additional needs (e.g., learning disabilities, physical disabilities and mental health issues). 

 

Understand the importance of safeguarding in educational settings, legal responsibilities and school policies related to safeguarding. 

 

Identify types of conflicts that may arise in a school setting. 

Learn techniques for effective conflict resolution, including mediation. 

 

Understand the impact of bullying, different forms of bullying and recognise the short- and long-term effects of bullying on students' mental health and well-being. 

Develop intervention strategies: explore practical intervention strategies to address and prevent bullying in schools. 

 

Understand basics of behaviour management, theory behind the topic of behaviour and why students don’t always behave as we would like.
